Email marketing lists tend to be a little bit more diverse, with some of them being more responsive than others. The most important things to do when building an email list is to go after people who are interested in what you have to offer in the first place. You should then give them a mixture of messages that is heavy on information and light on marketing. You would be surprised with how well it works.
