Ex-Pats offered cash rewards for information on tax evaders

According to the English website of the British Embassy in Spain, residents in Spain can get cash rewards for information leading to the capture of the smugglers of tobacco and tax evaders.

HM Revenue & Customs has launched a new campaign asking people the information necessary to call a toll-free customs. The toll free number 900 988 922 and Spanish, they say, there is no need to give your personal information.

The invitation to contribute to the fight against illegal imports of cigarettes in Spain, often en route to the United Kingdom, presents itself as the smugglers try to make huge profits by evading taxes or the sale of counterfeit cigarettes of low quality, tobacco and other goods.

Approximately 225 million tons of cigarettes and other tobacco were destined for the UK markets were seized in Spain during the past year. Cigarettes may seem genuine, but are often related to brands that claim to represent. Moonlight is also very likely to be false.

Tax evasion than other HM Revenue & Customs include games and want to hear about Paris, money laundering and VAT ‘carousel’ fraud in Europe.

“We hope that the public will help us with force smugglers and swindlers who deceive the rest of us, not making their full contribution to the cost of public services,” said a spokesman for HMRC. “These people are criminals that we catch.”
